H. Greeley Wells, Jr., Sullivan County District Attorney

 

Greeley Wells, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, received his B.S. degree in 1967 from the University of Tennessee and his J.D. degree from U.T. in 1969. He was admitted to the bar in May 1970.  Immediately upon graduation from law school, Greeley was appointed Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served as an investigator and legal instructor in the Cleveland, Ohio; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Washington, D.C. offices of the FBI.


In 1976 he joined the District Attorney's staff in Sullivan County as an Assistant District Attorney General. Since that time he has completed the Northwestern University law school course for prosecutors, the National District Attorney's Association Career Prosecutor Course, and the FBI National Law Institute. He is a member of the Kingsport Bar Association, the Bristol Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, the National District Attorney's Association, the Association of Government Attorneys in Capital Litigation and the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference. He recently served as President of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference (2004-2005), and is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Bar Association.

 

Greeley was appointed District Attorney General for the Second Judicial District (Sullivan County) by Governor Ned McWherter in October 1993, and has since won reelection twice. He maintains an active courtroom presence in major cases and sits on the board of directors of various non-profit/law enforcement agencies. In 1996 he founded "The Frontline", Sullivan County's law enforcement-oriented domestic violence task force.


He and his wife Sue reside in Kingsport, Tennessee. Their children John and Laura are both adults living in Atlanta, Georgia. Greeley is an active member of First Presbyterian Church and a charter member of The Kingsport Downtown Rotary Club.
